Hay Studio: Transition

Solo exhibition: 35 paintings with video installation.

26 May - 3 June 2017

HS3.jpg

These paintings come from a life-long relationship with the Pentire peninsula, a small section of the North Cornwall coast. Few environments encapsulate the forces and symbols of transition with greater vigour than Cornwall's Atlantic coast. It is easy to see the landmarks and features of places like this as being imbued with an unchallengeable sense of permanence and immutability. These qualities are, however, just illusions.

There is no stasis; all here is change; all is in a state of transition. As with uncertainty, transition is a universal constant. Despite this, and to the extent that we register these phenomena, we can approach both with reluctance, viewing them as fraught and discomfiting. Our preferred strategy  is, invariably, to mitigate against transition and uncertainty or, if that fails, to negotiate them into the relative sanctuary of the unconscious.

National Trust: Pentire Farmhouse / Pentire Head

Solo exhibition of 67 paintings, with video installation, throughout the 12 rooms of the National Trust’s Pentire Farmhouse, North Cornwall.

30 October - 5 November 2016

Penn Tir: Head Land

Penn Tir: Head Land

These paintings take their inspiration from a life-long relationship with a short section of the North Cornwall coast. From Port Quin to Pentire, with Epphaven and Lundy Bay, Trevan, Carnweather, Com Pit and the iron age cliff castle at Rumps Point in between. This area is characterised by precipitous cliffs, rarely accessible beaches and mostly un-visited islands. All standing in exposed opposition to the relentless and untrammelled Atlantic reach.

The paintings are some distance from absolute depiction with few immediate references to actual landmarks or recognisable phenomena. They are not pure abstraction however. They are instead an almost synaesthetic response to the experience of being in landscape as opposed to merely observing it; a personal testimony to the sensation, memory, and imagination of a specific location and one's place in it.
